Benny the Butterfly

by Eliran Dayan

18 Oct 2024

In a garden bright, where the flowers bloom,

Lived Benny the Butterfly, with a spirit that zoomed.

His colors were vivid, a beautiful sight,

But oh, poor Benny had just one wing in flight.

His friends would flutter, so graceful and free,

“Come join us, Benny! Just look at the glee!”

But Benny would sigh, with a heart full of dreams,

“I want to fly high, like the sun’s golden beams.”

He tried and he tried, but he just couldn’t soar,

While the other butterflies laughed and they swore,

“Oh, Benny, dear Benny, you cannot take wing,

With only one side, you can’t do this thing!”

But Benny was brave, and he wouldn’t give in,

“I’ll find a way to show them I can win!”

He spotted the flowers, so lovely and sweet,

With nectar galore, a delicious treat.

With his tiny legs, he danced on each petal,

Gathering nectar, he felt like a medal!

He buzzed and he fluttered, he worked without pause,

His heart full of hope, for his very own cause.

Then one day he met a kind dung beetle,

“Dear Benny,” he said, “I see you’re a fighter!

Let’s make you a wing, it will surely be grand,

Together we’ll craft it, just give me your hand.”

They gathered bright petals, and leaves from the trees,

With glue made of honey and a gentle breeze.

They worked through the day, till the moon shone so bright,

A wing made of colors, a marvelous sight!

Benny was thrilled, but his heart raced with fear,

“What if I can’t fly? What if I just tear?”

The other bugs giggled, their laughter like rain,

But Benny stood tall, and he felt no more pain.

He took a deep breath, spread his new wing wide,

And with a strong leap, he began his glide.

At first he wobbled, but then he took flight,

Zooming through flowers, oh what a delight!

Faster and faster, he whirled in the air,

His heart full of joy, without any care.

The other butterflies stopped in their tracks,

“Amazing!” they shouted, “Look at those flaps!”

Benny had done it, he flew like a dream,

Collecting sweet nectar, like a sunbeam’s gleam.

His friends cheered him on, their laughter now gone,

For Benny the Butterfly had finally shone.

From that day forward, he soared with great pride,

No longer alone, he had friends by his side.

So remember, dear children, if things seem too tough,

With hope and some courage, you’ll find you’re enough!
